How to Protect Yourself from Online Defamation

There is nothing that isn’t on the internet in today’s world. This is good and bad. On the one hand, people have new social networks and an encyclopedia of global knowledge at their fingertips. On the other hand, you have online defamation, cyber bullies, and cyber stalkers. There are plenty of people online who take great pleasure in making the lives of others more difficult, thinking nothing about lying about a company or individual just to see their reputation go down the drain. If you have fallen victim to this type of behavior, you need to know about reputation repair tactics.

Protect Yourself from Online Defamation

Is There Nothing You Can Do?

You have no control over what people say about you online, and no control over the sites where they publish it. And if they publish it on your own site and you remove it, their attack will become even more relentless. So is there nothing that you can do? It may seem that way, particularly when you consider that even the experts will tell you that these cyber trolls are hidden behind firewalls of anonymity and could be anywhere from the street behind you to the other side of the planet. And if you have spotted a negative review about you somewhere and you have asked that company to remove that review, you will also have found out that they are unlikely to oblige, no matter how much evidence you have to prove that the comment is defamatory.

So what can you do? One option is to find out who is posting the things about you online and sue them, filing a restraining order against them. However, figuring out who the person is who is doing it is almost impossible. And they will fight you with everything they have got, including the right to free speech. And even if you have the ability to find the person, and they are in the same country as you, and you can bring them to court, and you can prove that they had no right to say what they said, do you have the time and the money to do all of that?

Reputation Management

There is another solution, however, and that is to play the stalkers at their own game. They are good at what they do, and they will make sure that anything bad they say about you will get found. But you can do the same. For every negative thing they say, you can put two or even three positive things. This is a double sided process. Firstly, you need to engage in SEO to have your information get found. Secondly, you need to engage in reverse SEO, pushing their information back down the search engines. This is what reputation management agencies can do for you, and they are very good at what they do. Having negative things said about you online is not the end of the world, there are things that you can do with the right professional help.
