Rule Based v Statistical: The Difference

In business, being able to reach out to different parts of the world is very important. This normally leads to greater exposure, and in turn, results in higher sales for the brand. However, getting your message across can be difficult, especially if it is not your native tongue.

This has been a problem for many, and that is why some opt to stay within their locale. However, if you are an up and coming business, expansion is necessary. The only way to do that is to get your message across in different languages. For this purpose alone, you can hire machinery translation services whenever you need it.

Machinery translation services

Machinery translation services is normally a software which companies use to translate one language to another.  There are various types however, and the two main machinery translation types are Rule Based and Statistical.

What is the difference between the two?

The difference lies in the source of their ability to translate languages from one to the other.

Rule based machinery translation services uses translation which is by the book. Meaning, coming a dictionary. This allows the translation to be more predictable while at the same time, reliable. It goes by years of translation rules which have been continuously relied upon by society.

On the other hand, it might be too technical for a lay person to understand. Especially if you are aiming to the majority of the public, this is a technicality that you should be mindful of. It would be a counter productive move on your part if the audience you wanted to reach is unable to understand the message you are trying to portray.

On the other side of the spectrum is the statistical machinery translation services. Its power comes from the set of texts made available to the software. That alone is a huge downside because it will only perfectly translate words which are embedded on its system, while the quality of translation to words which are not can be unpredictable. That is why, in a way, it can be unreliable.

On a good note however, it is more flexible. It is not hard wired to follow grammatical rules, and thus is more relatable, especially when your aiming for the general public. This might not be the tool if you are reaching for experts in the field. Otherwise, you might just be laughed at, or worse, discredited as a business which is a carnal sin when it comes to industry.

So, among the two, which is better?

It really comes down to what you need them for. There is never a correct answer. It is always situational. However, if you are an up and coming business, the rule-based machinery translation services is the best option. You want to be taken seriously by everyone, especially on a multinational level by the leading brands in your industry.

To expand should be the ultimate goal of every business. It should never become successful and stay in stagnation, and in this world, staying in the same place for years is a failure, especially in business.
