What Is The Difference Between DSL And Cable?

Whether you simply use your computer to browse the web or for tasks related to your job or home-based business, having the right internet connection makes a world of difference in terms of productivity and ease-of-use. Knowing what you want is important when you are shopping around for certain internet providers and tools, but the process may seem a bit complicated when you finally begin diving into all of the options at your disposal. One example of this can be seen when you are faced with choices such as DSL internet and cable internet.

What Is The Difference Between DSL And Cable

Are you aware of the differences between these two types of internet options and how they stack up against each other and other options on the market? If dsl vs cable has been on your mind, here is a brief guide that will help you learn about the two options and which one will work best for you.

What is DSL internet?

Remember when the internet was still in its infancy and one needed to utilize that clunky, noisy box to access the world wide web that would take forever to load up? While DSL (an acronym for digital subscriber line) used to be known for these qualities, quite a few improvements have been made in this type of internet service since it was first provided. DSL is a type of internet service that is accessed through phone service provider via the phone lines running through your home. Because it depends upon your chosen provider and the distance between you and your provider, speeds for your internet may vary and there is no set speed that you can expect from your DSL connection.

What is Cable internet?

Cable internet is exactly what it sounds like: a type of internet connection that utilizes your television provider to deliver internet service to your house. Rather than running through the phone lines, cable internet uses the connections that make it possible for you to get access to cable. While this isn’t the fastest type of internet service currently available, cable internet is generally considered to be faster than DSL, as download speeds usually fall between 10 to 500 megabytes per second, and upload speeds are generally 5 to 50 megabytes per second. As with DSL internet, you will often bundle your cable with your internet for dual service.

Which one is best?

The truth is that your choice of internet service will depend entirely on your personal needs. For those who live in rural areas and are not usually able to access cable internet, DSL is most likely your best bet and, because of the improvements made over the past few years, you will still have access to reliable, affordable, and secure internet that will get the job done. You will still be able to access the internet and do basic things like browsing websites and sending emails, but it may not be as fast as you would like depending on where you live and how far away you are from your provider. If you have access to it, cable internet is one of the faster choices and is still fairly affordable when bundled with the right cable package. If you need to handle quite a bit on your internet connection and rely on it for any kind of important business or personal matters, it is preferable that you choose cable internet, as it will give you the speeds and reliability that you will need to get things done.
