What Aluminum Grades are Used for Art Machining?

Aluminum is widely used metal these days for the manufacturing of machines and its parts. The reason behind is its durability and anti-corrosiveness. No matter how much moisture is present it does not get corroded thus have a long life. It has high strength and bears high temperatures without using its firmness or durability. The different grades of the aluminum are used for making machines but for art machining, the grades that are used are described below. At artmachining.com find the aluminum grades that are best to make the machines are

Aluminum Grades are Used for Art machining

Alloy 1100

It is a commercially pure form of the aluminum that has the following composition

  • Aluminum: 99.0–99.95%
  • Copper: 0.05–0.20%
  • Iron: 0.95% max
  • Manganese: 0.05% max
  • Silicon: 0.95% max
  • Zinc: 0.1% max
  • Residuals: 0.15% max

It is mechanically the strong grade of the aluminum and mainly used in the manufacturing of the rivets. The soft and ductile alloy has excellent workability. It can be welded at any temperature. Mainly food and chemical industry use this type of aluminum grade.

Alloy 2014

Alloy 2014 aluminum is chemically composed of following metals.

Aluminum: Remainder

  • Chromium: 0.1% max
  • Copper: 3.9% – 5%
  • Iron: 0.7% max
  • Magnesium: 0.2% – 0.8%
  • Manganese: 0.4 – 1.2%
  • Remainder: Each 0.05% max
  • Remainder: Total 0.15% max
  • Silicon: 0.5% – 1.2%
  • Titanium: 0.15% max
  • Titanium + Zinc: 0.2% max
  • Zinc: 0.25% max

It has high strength and machining abilities. Most industrialists use this grade to make machines and their parts. Mainly aerospace industries use this allow forming structures because of the resistance against the environmental factors. It has strong anti-corrosive properties that do not allow the aluminum to get damaged.

Alloy 2011

Another mechanically strong alloy of the aluminum is alloy 2011. It has strong strength due to the following composition

Si-0.4%

Fe-0.7%

Cu-5 to 6%

Pb-0.2 to 0.6%

Bi-0.2-0.6%

Zn-0.3%

Other-0.15%

It has high machining capabilities. The high-speed machining creates the fine chips that can be easily removed to give the machine a uniform look. The most complex and detailed parts are made through this type of aluminum grade. The type of alloy has poor weldability properties. Although it is mainly used for the machining, therefore the mechanics don’t need to weld to other parts. They do fabrication and joining with help of nuts and bolts. It is mainly used for the appliances and automotive trims, fasteners, fittings, and ordnance.

Alloy 3003

It is another widely used aluminum alloy. The chemical composition is

Aluminum: 96.8 to 99%

  • Copper: 0.05 to 0.20%
  • Iron: 0.70% max
  • Manganese: 1.0 to 1.5%
  • Silicon: 0.6% max
  • Zinc: 0.1% max
  • Residuals: 0.15% max

It has great usability and has excellent anti-corrosive properties. Another feature that makes it feasible for machining is that it can be easily drawn, spun, welded or brazed.

The other commonly used alloys are alloy 5052, alloy 6061, alloy 6063, and alloy 7075. These all are high strength metals that are mainly used in industry for manufacturing of different machine parts and architectural alloys.
